Interview: John Hauserman on Retirement Planning

This morning I had the chance to chat with my friend John Hauserman of RetirementQuest.com. I’m a little ways down the road from retirement, but that’s the perfect time to start thinking about it—when it’s not an urgent, pressing need. By then it’s too late. I asked John a couple of questions that have been on my mind. John, I’m not a risk-taker, and I love it when people can give me a heads-up so I don’t make a huge mistake. What do you consider the single biggest mistake people make when it comes to planning for retirement? The single … Continue reading

Planning for the Worst

It is something that we don’t want to think about, but it happens. What would happen to your finances if you or your partner were to get sick or die? Yes, when you have small children you really, really don’t want to think about the potential for death, especially dying when they are small. However, planning for these potential events is important. We just got life insurance. When my daughter was about to be born, we were going to get it, but it dropped off the plate. This is because I thought I was no longer eligible, since at that … Continue reading

Planning Your Vacation Around the Oil Spill

The other day, I told my husband we should go to the beach here in Jacksonville, N.C. He agreed, saying that we should go before the oil gets here. Sadly, he was only half joking. Many Gulf tourist destinations are seeing oil in the water and on the beaches. Florida’s Emerald Coast seems to be holding up to its name, at least for now. While the Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau said that some small pieces of tar turned up on the Henderson Beach State Park last weekend, they were easily removed and no more oil has been seen. … Continue reading

Planning a Disney Vacation? Consider Kids Safety Bands

I got a great tip from one of our moms Adele (thanks Adele!) and I wanted to share it here. If you’re planning a trip to Disney World anytime soon, you may want to consider investing in a Kids Safety Band. You’ve seen the bands everywhere usually with a brand name on them or a notation of support for Breast Cancer or Missing in Action soldiers and more. These bands are taking a leaf out of those books, but they are designed just for your kids. What I Like About Them The cost is really reasonable, you can have the … Continue reading

Code Red: Planning for Pets When Emergencies Call You Away

This has been in the back of my mind for a while now because Wayne’s grandparents are in their mid-80s and my parents are in their mid-70s. They all live in Denver, and while Wayne’s grandparents are relatively healthy, my parents have both been struggling with increasingly declining health. So I’ve been trying to put some plans in place in case we get the worst call any person can ever get. Just yesterday I asked Wayne what we would do in such an emergency. “You shouldn’t think like that. You attract what you think about, you know.” “I know, but … Continue reading

Advance Planning Before Mom Has Surgery: While At The Hospital

In my last guest Blog I wrote about the fact that on Monday I will be having surgery and some of the things I have done to prepare my home and family. This Blog is about the planning I need to do for the time I am away at the hospital. Hospital stays are typically as short as possible in years past I might have expected to stay for five or more days, but this time I don’t expect to be hospitalized for more then a day of two (if I am lucky it will be 2 days!). Short or … Continue reading

Preventing Thanksgiving Meltdowns

It can be the best of times. It can be the worst of times. I’m referring to Thanksgiving. Or more specifically Thanksgiving gatherings with extended family… and a heaping helping of dysfunction. I once saw a greeting card that read: “Thanksgiving, bringing out the best in family dysfunction since 1863.” Hey, if you can’t prevent it, you might as well embrace it. In many clans, no Turkey Day celebration would be complete without some family drama. Still, you don’t have to let the feud between Uncle Larry and Cousin Stewart ruin your holiday. Nor should you allow meltdowns by your … Continue reading
